Removing a stuck aircraft pin from a used Steadicam® Zephyr arm connection block and reconfiguring to goofy mode
What the thread found
- Oil the pin first; if it does not come out easily, it is likely bent and a replacement pin should be on hand before attempting removal, as a bent pin may not re-insert.
- Bent aircraft pins signal underlying problems: they do not bend easily, so investigate why the pin bent, as this indicates misalignment or improper load distribution.
- A common cause of pin binding is a warped end cap whose two lugs are no longer parallel; carefully tap the end without the ring using a plastic hammer, then test whether the pin slides freely into the end cap alone to determine if it is straight.
- For a stuck bent pin, one operator successfully drove it out using a hammer and drift punch; replacement pins are readily available from the manufacturer.
- The pin shown was missing its unlock button; after removal, order a replacement pin with button from Tiffen.
- An alternative reconfiguration without removing the pin: loosen the two gimbal head knurled screws, rotate the assembly 180 degrees, and remount.
Depends on
- Requires identifying root cause of pin bending to prevent recurrence
- Availability of replacement pins depends on supply
- Plastic hammer and drift punch needed for removal if pin is severely stuck
