Powering a Canon 7D camera mounted on a Steadicam Pilot rig
15 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- Using the camera's internal batteries is generally preferred over powering from the sled battery system when working with smaller cameras like DSLRs.
- A Manfrotto quick release plate allows you to remove and reattach the camera for battery changes without losing the balanced position on the rig.
- The camera's battery compartment should be positioned to allow access while mounted on the sled, avoiding the need to remove the camera for battery swaps.
- Adding a battery grip to the camera provides additional battery capacity and convenient battery replacement without removing the camera from the rig.
- Lighter weight on the camera mount generally improves rig performance compared to heavier cable and power systems.
- The Canon 7D has both HDMI and composite video outputs; the composite output can be accessed via an included cable and adapted to BNC connectors for use with standard monitors.
- A 1/4"-20 threaded screw is the standard connection point for camera mounting plates on tripod-type dovetails.
Depends on
- One participant reported difficulty using an HDMI monitor converter with the 7D on a Pilot rig.
- Weight distribution preferences for rig performance may vary depending on individual setup and experience.
- The ability to change batteries on the camera while mounted may depend on the specific baseplate configuration used.
