Automatic power switching from battery to external supply when camera rig is docked
13 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- An Anton Bauer Tandem battery system allows hot-swapping batteries while simultaneously powering equipment from shore power when docked.
- A docking bracket with electrical contacts on the gimbal forks can automatically switch power sources and charge batteries when the rig is positioned in the dock.
- Custom solutions can be built by adding XLR connectors to the bottom of a camera sled to connect external block batteries or AC power supplies, bypassing internal battery power during extended static setups.
- Professional camera rigs typically maintain power during breaks by using multiple batteries on chargers rather than relying on single-battery hot-swap systems.
- V-Lock battery plates do not have a direct equivalent to the Anton Bauer Tandem hot-swap system, though battery plates can be swapped to different mount types to enable compatibility.
Depends on
- No commercial V-Lock equivalent to the Anton Bauer Tandem was confirmed to exist at the time of discussion.
- Custom power-switching solutions require technical knowledge and modification of existing equipment.
- Impact on gimbal balancing from added docking hardware was not fully evaluated.
- One docking bracket proposal with charging contacts appears to have been speculative rather than an existing product.
