Zephyr arm failure caused by improperly seated pin during extended shoot with heavy payload

13 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • A pin connecting the arm to the socket block connector can work loose during operation if inserted from the bottom instead of the top, eventually falling out and causing the arm to bend under load.
  • The arm's pin should always be inserted from the top with the key-ring positioned at the top to use gravity as a fail-safe against loosening.
  • Operating at the maximum loading capacity for extended periods can contribute to material fatigue and component failure over time.
  • Only the lower section of the arm bends when the pin is not fully seated, because the upper portion separates while weight bends the unsupported lower part.
  • The pin can loosen during transport and equipment packing, requiring regular verification that it is fully seated before operation.

Depends on

  • The reported incident involved a Zephyr arm specifically, and findings may not apply to other arm models.
  • Whether design improvements to the pin mechanism are warranted remains disputed between participants.
  • The exact contribution of the six-hour operational duration versus improper pin seating to the failure is unclear.
  • No information about whether the equipment was at actual maximum rated load or operator's estimate of maximum load.
