Static balance loss after checking drop time on camera stabilizer rig

17 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • A loose or warped component at the top of the gimbal post that connects it to the stage can cause balance to shift when the rig is rotated or adjusted
  • Misalignment between the yoke and pan bearing axis may cause the rig to hold balance in one orientation but lose it after panning to different angles
  • Play or looseness between the yoke and pan bearing can be detected by tilting the rig to make these bearings vertical and observing whether gaps increase or the sled shifts to one side
  • A loose screw or internal component inside the top stage can exist without being audible and may contribute to balance issues
  • The dovetail lock mechanism on the stage can wear or fail to engage properly, potentially affecting balance stability
  • Bearing preload tightness in the stage assembly is a factor that requires checking and adjustment
  • Cables attached to the rig can influence balance if they are under tension or misrouted

Depends on

  • The original poster did not confirm the final diagnosis or solution
  • The discussion involves a specific rig model (Masters with Flyer LE mentioned as comparison) from around 2009
  • One suggested cause, gimbal concentricity issues, was mentioned but not conclusively linked to the specific problem
  • The loose screw found inside the top stage had no identifiable location, suggesting either it was extraneous or its purpose was unclear
