Gimbal bearing lubrication: oil quantity, product selection, and the performance versus protection trade-off.

What the thread found
- The manufacturer website recommends a maximum of 4 drops, while the manual suggests 5 to 10 drops, creating initial ambiguity.
- One approach applies 3 to 4 drops at 12, 3, 6, and 9 o'clock positions, working them into the inner and outer races; excess oil increases resistance.
- Broad consensus favors starting with a single drop, prioritizing smooth performance and adding more only if needed.
- More oil protects the bearing better, requires less frequent cleaning, and resists dust ingress more effectively, but increases friction—especially with higher-viscosity oils.
- Practical technique: apply one drop, rotate the bearing slowly by ear; if it grinds or squeaks, add oil; if it runs smooth and silent throughout rotation, the sweet spot is reached; if it stops abruptly, too much has been applied.
- Mobil Velocite No. 6 is recommended at one drop for standard use or two drops for enhanced bearing protection; it is also available as sewing machine oil.
- Several operators received Tiffen Steadicam® M1 and M2 gimbals factory-filled with excess oil or grease; installing a better bearing and using only a tiny drop eliminated pan wobble and sluggishness.
- A Swiss watch lubricant laboratory recommended synthetic grease 9415 (operating range −30 to +80 °C) when contacted.
- ACF-50 (aviation corrosion preventative fluid) has proven effective on cranes and jibs; its use on Steadicam® gimbals remains untested.
Depends on
- Manufacturers' documentation conflicts; operator experience diverges on optimal quantity.
- Viscosity of oil selected affects friction and performance.
- Pan bearing design and factory preparation vary between units and may require different approaches.
- Climate and operating temperature influence grease behavior and maintenance intervals.
