Follow focus motor control modes for cinema cameras

20 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • Cameras with mechanical toggle switches for focus motor control typically operate in continuous run mode
  • Cameras with push button controls for focus motor control typically operate in momentary mode
  • Older Arri camera models operate in continuous mode
  • Newer Arri models with 24-volt systems operate in continuous mode when using 11-pin Fischer connectors, but operate in momentary mode when using RS 3-pin Fischer connectors

Depends on

  • The general rule about toggle switches versus push buttons may not apply to all camera models
  • The connector type determining continuous versus momentary mode applies specifically to newer 24-volt Arri models and may not generalize to other manufacturers
