Modifications to a Steadicam Scout rig for expanded power distribution and connectivity

What the thread found

  • The Scout's original single rod connector can be replaced with a larger rod assembly to accommodate additional equipment without permanently modifying the post.
  • Extra power lines and HD-SDI cables can be routed through the bottom of the Scout stage using tapped holes already present in the stock design.
  • A Hammond 1590C electronics box combined with a Camvate v-mount distribution plate can supply multiple voltage outputs including 14.8V for D-tap, 12V, and 5V for auxiliary equipment like wireless video transmitters and follow focus systems.
  • Additional weight can be mounted on top of the stage using Glidecam weight plates sandwiched between a SmallRig Arri dovetail and the standard Steadicam plate to maintain balance.
  • A 3-pin Lemo connector can be swapped for a 2-pin configuration if an IDX battery plate is modified to match available connectors.
  • Gimbal yoke balancing is required after adding top-mounted weights to achieve stable operation.

Depends on

  • Modifications assume familiarity with Steadicam balance and tuning.
  • Power distribution voltages were benchmarked but amperage capacity was not fully tested with camera power draw.
  • No external camera power was being supplied at the time of the modifications.
  • Zephyr top stage housing skirts were sought but reportedly unavailable from manufacturers.
