Experience with RTMotion MK2 wireless follow focus system
15 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- The RTMotion MK2 motor operates very quietly, with sound recordists reporting no audible motor noise even at close proximity.
- The system auto-calibrates by powering the receiver and placing the motor near the lens middle, then tracking the lens start and end points.
- The RTMotion MK2 successfully works with various lens types including compact primes, Cooke lenses, Canon L-series lenses, and low-quality lenses with minimal dynamic range.
- The receiver is compact and mounts to 15mm or 19mm rails using mini 4-pin XLR connectors.
- The transmitter uses a standard 9V battery lasting many hours through full shooting days.
- The system supports variable motor speeds from very fast to extremely slow.
- Manual lens calibration is possible without requiring the motor to be physically stopped by hand.
- The cost was approximately 1350 pounds for a single-motor kit upgradeable to three motors on the same receiver.
Depends on
- User experience limited to approximately 4-5 shooting days at the time of review.
- A previous link mentioned negative experiences with RTMotion, though the reviewing user stated those photos did not match their actual unit.
- Extensive menu adjustment options available through LED lights, but not fully explored by the reviewer.
