Stiff gimbal clamp on Zephyr Sled
14 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- The pivot mechanism in the tool-free gimbal clamp can become stiff due to lack of lubrication.
- Removing the gimbal screw from the opposite side, applying silicone spray lubricant to the screw, and reinstalling it can restore smooth clamp operation.
- The allen key securing screw should not be overtightened; proper adjustment involves tightening gradually while testing resistance, then releasing and reattaching the clamp to calibrate the right tension.
- Early production Zephyr gimbal clamps had a high failure rate and were later redesigned by the manufacturer.
- A warranty replacement clamp should be requested from the manufacturer rather than continuing to use a problematic original unit.
Depends on
- The lubrication solution may be temporary if the original clamp design is defective.
- No details provided on clamp inspection or warning signs that might indicate imminent failure.
- Discussion does not specify which Zephyr model year or revision is affected.
