Preparing a Canon 7D camera for aerial filming operations
16 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- An HDMI monitor or a Black Magic HDMI to HDSDI converter with 12V power cable is needed for aerial camera work.
- The 7D features a mini-HDMI port, requiring a mini-HDMI to HDMI cable adapter.
- For setups with SD monitors, an AV breakout cable with mini-USB connector on one end and composite video/audio RCA plugs on the other can be used with a female RCA to male BNC connector.
- The camera's automatic shut-off feature creates a tradeoff: settings above 5 minutes risk battery drain and overheating in outdoor conditions, while shorter intervals of 30 seconds to 2 minutes cause unwanted power-downs during rehearsals.
- Multiple spare batteries and chargers are essential for extended aerial operations.
- Still lenses require lens gears installed to enable proper follow focus motor operation.
- Lightweight or flimsy plastic matteboxes and iris rod systems mounted to the 7D base can be inadequate, as focus motor torque may push the lens and camera away from their intended position.
Depends on
- Advice applies specifically to aerial camera work on a sled platform.
- Specific equipment compatibility depends on individual rig configuration and monitor type.
- The mattebox weakness observation is based on field experience with particular equipment combinations, not comprehensive testing.
- No testing data provided for the camera shut-off temperature and battery drain thresholds mentioned.
