Repurposing legacy BP-95dx batteries for alternative power applications
20 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- BP-95dx batteries were designed as deck batteries for older Sony beta video equipment and can be adapted for powering auxiliary devices on set
- These batteries can be retrofitted with a 4-pin XLR connector to power equipment such as video receivers, follow focus motors, and other accessories
- A dead or deeply discharged BP-95dx battery may not register on certain chargers due to low voltage, but can often be revived using a compatible charger and will thereafter charge normally on standard equipment
- The batteries can be mounted using velcro to lightweight mounting surfaces when proper bracket points are unavailable
Depends on
- The original charging connectors are proprietary and locating compatible female adapter connectors requires research beyond standard retailers
- Adding multiple power outputs to a single battery requires careful wiring and may compromise the original charging capability if not properly implemented
- Charger compatibility varies by model, and some chargers will refuse to charge batteries below a certain voltage threshold
