Sony F3 camera performance in production work and steadicam use
15 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- The Sony F3 lacks the ability to master and slave multiple units together, unlike the EX3 model.
- The camera includes built-in neutral density filters.
- The viewfinder and monitor quality are considered inadequate.
- Hand-held operation is awkward and uncomfortable.
- Video output quality is acceptable for the price point.
- The camera becomes heavy when fitted with prime lenses, making it unsuitable for extended handheld work like multi-hour concert shoots.
- When rigged for stereoscopic 3D work with zoom lenses and heavy support plates, the camera setup becomes burdensome to operate.
- The camera's mounting base can be modified by drilling clearance holes to accept alternative mounting plates.
Depends on
- Feedback is based on 2011-era production experience and may not reflect current standards.
- Most experience described is with steadicam or 3D configurations, not typical studio or standard handheld use.
- Specific remote control interface compatibility remains unclear from the discussion.
- The weight issue is partly attributable to lens choice and rigging setup rather than the camera body alone.
- No consensus on whether performance issues stem from the camera itself or its limitations for particular production styles.
