Zephyr sled battery configuration options and power delivery considerations for different camera types
14 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
DisputedParticipants disagreed and reached no conclusion. Read the findings as positions, not as an answer.
What the thread found
- The Zephyr sled can be upgraded with a 12/24V adapter plate that plugs into existing wiring and includes a toggle switch to select between voltage modes.
- In 12V mode, all connectors deliver 12V only; in 24V mode, connectors provide either 12V or 24V depending on cable pinout, allowing mixed voltage accessories.
- The 24V configuration uses two 12V batteries wired in series, or the same batteries wired in parallel for 12V operation with extended runtime.
- Hot-swapping batteries is only possible in 12V mode, not in 24V mode.
- Running power-hungry cameras in 24V mode reduces amperage through the sled wiring compared to 12V operation at the same wattage, which decreases heat buildup in the 22AWG wiring.
- The Zephyr sled wiring has limitations when powering cameras drawing over 90-120W such as the Arri Alexa or Epic, and using high-capacity batteries rated above 100-120W is recommended for such loads.
- Two batteries mounted on the auxiliary battery plate provide better weight distribution and counterbalancing for heavier cameras.
- Total watt-hours of energy available remain the same whether using 12V or 24V configuration with two 12V batteries.
Depends on
- The adequacy of Zephyr wiring for power-hungry cameras like Alexa and Epic remains disputed among participants.
- Heat buildup reduction at 24V is presented as theoretical mitigation rather than solved problem.
- Red One and similar high-draw cameras may stress batteries even more than Alexa.
- Separating battery power sources between top and bottom sled stages remains largely untested in practice.
