Choosing a steadicam rig to carry a stripped-down RED Scarlet camera

14 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • A Pilot steadicam can work for a minimally configured RED Scarlet but leaves almost no headroom for adding accessories later.
  • The Scout reportedly has an 18-pound weight limit and may be suitable for a stripped Scarlet, though experienced feedback was limited.
  • A used Flyer LE or new Scout may offer better value than a Pilot for hobbyist use with a stripped Scarlet.
  • A Zephyr is the smallest rig recommended for a fully-equipped Epic or Scarlet, as it can handle professional configurations and future additions.
  • Removing features like wireless focus control and matte box to stay within weight limits compromises image quality and creates practical problems like lens flares.
  • A Pilot was successfully used to fly a stripped Epic with only a wide prime lens and a stripped ONE MX in an emergency situation by compensating with arm strength, though this exceeded rated capacity.
  • Purchasing a steadicam rig for occasional hobbyist use on unpaid shoots creates pressure to develop operational skills and often leads to discovering that missing accessories were necessary.

Depends on

  • The Pilot experience with a stripped Scarlet was positive only when truly minimal, and adding any accessories made the rig inadequate.
  • The ONE MX example on a Pilot exceeded the rig's design limits and required extra manual compensation from the operator.
  • Scout weight capacity information came from specification claims rather than hands-on testing in the thread.
  • No recent pricing was confirmed beyond a single 2012 reference to a Pilot at $3,995.
  • The thread included conflicting advice about whether to buy a rig or hire professional operators instead.
