Powering camera accessories on a budget stabilizer rig using V-Mount batteries
13 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- A standard V-Mount battery plate without built-in regulators is sufficient for powering accessories like wireless follow focus, wireless transmitters, and monitors on a stabilizer rig.
- D-Tap connectors should not be used to power cameras directly because the fuses are often rated too low for camera power draw, connectors can be accidentally disconnected mid-take, and they can theoretically be inserted backwards causing damage.
- For powering multiple accessories, run heavy-gauge wire (14 gauge minimum, 16 gauge acceptable) from the V-Mount plate battery terminals up the hollow post and terminate with either a specific camera connector or a multi-output distribution block.
- D-Tap is appropriate for powering monitors and can use standard D-Tap to barrel connectors.
- A V-Mount plate with Syncron functionality is unnecessary for powering accessories unrelated to on-camera lights.
Depends on
- The specific cheapest plate model discussed may be outdated (2013 product links).
- Soldering skills are required for proper installation, or professional rewiring service must be sought.
- The budget rig discussed lacked proper video cable routing in the center post and may have required additional professional modifications beyond basic power wiring.
