Operating Sony F55 camera on Artemis EFP gimbal with SD video output compatibility
13 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
Note (as of October 2026)Curt O. Schaller, the developer of Artemis and Trinity, has no longer been with ARRI since the end of 2025. To our knowledge, ARRI currently has no dedicated team and no official contact persons for its stabilizer systems. In our view, the future of this line is uncertain. If you are buying new, get written confirmation from ARRI beforehand on how long service and spare parts are guaranteed. Have used rigs checked by the manufacturer before you buy.
What the thread found
- The Sony F55 is relatively lightweight for Artemis gimbal operation but becomes heavy when equipped with accessories like RAW recorder, V-lock battery, focus-and-zoom control, and matte box.
- Adding weight to the camera through battery placement or a weight cage improves gimbal balance and panning smoothness.
- The Sony F55 does not natively output SD composite video and requires an external down-converter to produce composite output for SD monitors.
- Both AJA and Decimator down-converters can perform HD to SD composite conversion for the Sony F55.
- AJA mini-converters may output multiple composite BNC connectors while the gimbal rig input accepts only a single composite BNC connector, requiring an adapter cable solution.
Depends on
- SD composite output via the test BNC connector was stated as not yet implemented in firmware at the time of discussion.
- AJA converter compatibility issues were reported but not fully resolved in the thread.
- Recommendations for weight solutions such as specific cage manufacturers are mentioned without complete technical details.
- This discussion is from 2013 and may not reflect current firmware or accessory compatibility.
