Starting steadicam work with M2 package: arm, post, and vest capacity for various camera types
What the thread found
- The G50x arm paired with M2 handled cameras weighing 30-40 pounds during workshop training without issues
- A 1.58 post is a good starting choice and lighter than larger alternatives, as manufacturers used this size on professional rigs before introducing 1.75 posts
- The G50x arm proved capable of supporting various digital cinema cameras including film cameras, though very heavy setups like Alexa SXT with anamorphic lenses or Alexa 65 would strain it
- A Zephyr vest with maximum 23 kg payload shows noticeable flex when loaded near its 20 pound limit and may not be ideal for cameras above that weight
- Adding cross back straps to a Zephyr vest can improve its performance at maximum payload
- Operators planning to regularly fly cameras heavier than 20 pounds should consider upgrading to a larger rig vest rather than relying on the Zephyr
Depends on
- Advice based on workshop training and personal experience rather than extensive production data
- Camera capability depends on the specific auxiliary kit configuration used with the camera body
- Geographic location and typical production needs influence practical equipment choices
- Upgrade to G70x arm is possible in the future if needed
