What the thread found
- The Archer can successfully carry cameras up to approximately 18 kg when properly balanced with added weight like spare batteries, despite an official specification of around 10 kg.
- The Archer is approximately 2 kg lighter than the Clipper, which can be advantageous during physically demanding shoots in difficult environments.
- Performance degradation occurs when the Archer gimbal is significantly overloaded, typically manifesting as increased drag and reduced dynamic balance precision.
- The Archer requires additional weight to be added at the bottom of the sled for proper balance when used with lighter cameras like the RED One.
- The Archer's weight capacity is primarily constrained by single battery limitations rather than gimbal design flaws.
- A G-50 arm has a 50-pound payload rating which may be limiting for 35mm film work with multiple accessories, whereas a G-70 or PRO arm removes weight constraints entirely.
- The Archer requires an HD-SDI downconverter for video monitoring when used with cameras like the RED One, or alternatively an HD-compatible monitor.
- Upgrades like a toolless gimbal grip and custom battery plates can significantly improve Archer performance and usability.
- The modular upgrade path differs between manufacturers: Tiffen Archer upgrades are limited, while MK-V offers greater modularity.
- For lighter work and mobile shoots, the Archer performs adequately despite having lighter specifications than the Clipper or Ultra models.
Depends on
- Real-world 35mm film camera setups with multiple motors often exceed the G-50 arm's 50-pound limit.
- The Archer design originated from earlier Steadicam models and may be superseded by newer designs.
- Different operators reported varying success with aftermarket vests and accessories, suggesting individual fit and preference vary.
- Some users experienced difficulty achieving tight folding and preventing twisting at the hinge mechanism.
- Video monitoring options depend on additional expensive equipment purchases, with different solutions having varying viewing angles and performance.
- Exchange rates and regional availability affect the relative cost-effectiveness of different manufacturers' products.
