Operating ARRI UMC wireless focus system with 12V power supply
20 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- The ARRI UMC can be operated using a 12V power input despite initial uncertainty from rental sources, as confirmed by the device manual.
- A custom cable connecting 12V power via Hirose 4 connector to XLR 3 output successfully powered the ARRI UMC wireless focus system.
- ARRI wireless focus systems have limited compatibility outside ARRI and Moviecam camera platforms.
- Gears for ARRI wireless focus are available primarily in 0.8 pitch, with custom gearing required for other lens types.
- Modifications to ARRI wireless focus equipment for use with other camera manufacturers may void the manufacturer warranty.
Depends on
- The 12V operation method was tested on a specific setup but represents a workaround rather than officially supported operation.
- Experience with ARRI UMC compatibility is limited to ARRI and Moviecam systems; compatibility with Panavision, Aaton, and other systems requires custom modifications with uncertain reliability.
- Gear availability and custom modification costs make the system less universal than desirable for multi-platform use.
