Compatibility between XCS ERGO handle and Tiffen gimbal designs

14 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • The XCS ERGO handle is mechanically incompatible with Tiffen gimbal spindle designs due to differences in spindle geometry, cone angle, and tolerances between the two manufacturers.
  • Adapting an ERGO handle to work with a Tiffen gimbal would require reverse-engineering and fabricating a custom spindle connector, making the modification cost-prohibitive.
  • The Tiffen Ultra2 gimbal uses different mounting spindle specifications than XCS and PRO gimbals, preventing direct attachment of the ERGO handle without significant modifications.
  • A complete gimbal replacement with an XCS model would be more economical than attempting to retrofit an ERGO handle to an existing Tiffen gimbal.
  • Creating a manufacturer-produced ERGO handle variant compatible with Tiffen gimbals would require substantial development resources and could raise intellectual property concerns.

Depends on

  • Information is from 2012 and gimbal designs may have evolved since then.
  • No actual attempted modifications or workarounds were completed in this discussion.
  • The cost comparison between replacement and modification is estimated but not precisely calculated.
  • The discussion focuses on Ultra2 model; compatibility with other Tiffen gimbal models is not addressed.
