Low mode mounting brackets for Arriflex SR cameras and handle stability issues
22 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- The SR2 low mode bracket attaches to four tapped holes on the camera body after the handle is completely removed.
- Mounting equipment directly to the camera handle causes vibration and bouncing due to insufficient structural integrity of the handle tapping.
- The Jerry Hill L-shaped low mode bracket worked well on unmodified SR cameras but became incompatible after video assist accessories were added to the side of later models.
- Arriflex and Chroziel manufacture low mode brackets that mount to rosettes rather than handle taps, though they may require removal of integrated video assist systems.
- For temporary short-duration shots, a dovetail can be screwed directly into the handle with supplementary reinforcement like a steel rod along the back to prevent rotation and vibration.
- Shooting with an inverted camera and flipping the image in post-production is an alternative to low mode mounting that saves on-set setup time.
- Modifying the support cage with heavier bars and structure reduces vibration and bouncing more effectively than handle-based mounting.
- The SR1 and SR2 low mode brackets are compatible with approximately 90 percent of those camera bodies.
- BaerBels low mode box provides a more solid alternative to modular mounting solutions and solves compatibility issues when low mode capability is needed unexpectedly on set.
Depends on
- Information is from 2004 and discusses equipment configurations specific to that era.
- The Jerry Hill bracket is no longer in production.
- The Seitz adjustable tilt SR low mode mount is rarely encountered and technical details are limited.
- Compatibility with video assist systems and other camera modifications is inconsistent across different mounting solutions.
- Direct handle mounting is only viable for short, brief takes and creates vibration issues that increase with camera movement.
