Wireless follow focus system selection and setup for DSLR and broadcast lenses
14 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- Digital follow focus systems with self-calibration have difficulty tracking continuous focus rings on lenses without hard stops, as motors tend to overshoot small resistance points.
- Lenses with hard stops such as Zeiss ZE, Zeiss CP2 prime lenses, Zeiss LWZ, and older Tokina models provide better compatibility with digital follow focus systems.
- Digital systems featuring lens mapping functionality allow operators to create reference points by taping focus positions against a measure, enabling software interpolation across the focus range.
- An iris slider add-on accessory works with both analog and digital receivers for focus control, but requires a digital receiver specifically for iris control.
- Analog follow focus receivers can be modified with an internal voltage switch to operate lightweight focus motors designed for ENG lenses at reduced power levels.
- The G-Zoom Bartech controller works exclusively with analog follow focus systems and receivers.
- For broadcast TV lenses, a complete wireless focus control setup can be built using an analog receiver, a Stanton focus motor with appropriate gear ring, the Bartech small focus controller attached to a gimbal handle, and appropriate motor mounting brackets.
