Finding and installing a dovetail plate for an SK2 Steadicam rig
12 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- The SK2 uses a dovetail plate to attach the camera to the rig, not a docking bracket (which is the stand used to hold the rig when not wearing it).
- Modern dovetail plates from newer Steadicam models may not be compatible with the SK2.
- A Zephyr camera plate can physically fit into an SK2 dovetail slot after removing a safety screw, but the SK2's rack and pinion fore-aft balance control system will not work with the Zephyr plate design.
- A Flyer dovetail plate is reported to fit the SK2, though it is expensive and may require special order.
- When using an incompatible modern plate on an SK2, balancing the rig becomes challenging and consultation with the manufacturer is recommended.
Depends on
- The Zephyr plate compatibility is based on one person's experience with an older SK2 model.
- Exact fit and functionality of other model plates with SK2 remains unconfirmed for most options.
- The Flyer plate fit is mentioned but not verified with detailed experience.
- This discussion does not address whether other function aspects are affected by using incompatible plates.
