Achieving dynamic balance on a Steadicam Pilot with a Panasonic HMC151 camera when the standard 3/4" guideline does not apply
17 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- The 3/4 inch center of gravity position behind the sled post is a starting point intended for larger rigs with significantly raised monitors, not a fixed requirement for all setups.
- Smaller rigs like the Pilot require the camera center of gravity positioned much closer to the centerline of the main post due to the reduced distance between monitor and battery weight distribution.
- Dynamic balance is achieved by adjusting camera position back and monitor position forward in small increments while spin testing at normal panning speeds.
- The monitor cable on the Pilot can be unwound and repositioned through the monitor bracket to extend the monitor farther from the sled centerline, increasing available adjustment range.
- Placing the monitor and battery at their outermost possible positions improves setup repeatability and speeds up achieving dynamic balance.
- Adding weights like Merlin units to the bottom of the rig can stabilize camera wavering during forward motion.
- Trimming for headroom by adjusting the stage forward or aft throws the rig out of both static and dynamic balance.
Depends on
- The Pilot has limited flex in monitor extension compared to larger rigs, restricting the range of possible adjustments.
- The relationship between monitor height, battery position, and camera position was not fully explained in the manufacturer guide for this specific rig model.
- Results may vary depending on the specific camera weight and monitor specifications used.
