Controlling zoom on a servo lens via MasterGrip MGT-2 over LBUS alongside AC's WCU-4/Hi-5 on ARRI Trinity 2 with RED Komodo X

Note (as of October 2026)Curt O. Schaller, the developer of Artemis and Trinity, has no longer been with ARRI since the end of 2025. To our knowledge, ARRI currently has no dedicated team and no official contact persons for its stabilizer systems. In our view, the future of this line is uncertain. If you are buying new, get written confirmation from ARRI beforehand on how long service and spare parts are guaranteed. Have used rigs checked by the manufacturer before you buy.

What the thread found

  • The most reliable solution in practice is a dedicated cforce mini motor on the zoom, connected via LBUS to the Trinity 2 head, with zoom axis assigned to the MasterGrip in the RCP-3 by remapping a joystick to zoom control.
  • The AC must disable iris and zoom control in their handset and operate focus only, otherwise the RCP-3 and handset commands conflict.
  • An alternative is connecting the servo directly via L-Cube 2 as a bypass at the lens port; one operator reported this works without issue on current firmware with iris remaining available to the focus puller (shader), matching the Trinity Live setup.
  • Other operators report that iris becomes blocked (held open or forced closed) via L-Cube 2 even on current firmware, with cause unclear.
  • External cmotion motors over LBUS in the RCP function reliably as well, adding weight but keeping the servo free for iris control.
  • An external zoom handgrip with cable running directly to the lens prevents roll by wrapping the cable around lens and camera body.

Depends on

  • Iris control behavior via L-Cube 2 appears firmware-dependent and inconsistent across setups.
  • L-Cube 2 servo compatibility and iris release depends on current firmware version and individual hardware configuration.
