Adding power distribution to a Zephyr crane top stage for multiple devices
14 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- The Zephyr top stage uses 22 AWG wiring, which limits the total power draw capacity of the system.
- A simple solution for adding power connections is a Lemo-to-P-tap cable combined with a P-tap multi-connector distribution block.
- When powering high-demand cameras like the Epic with motorized focus systems and wireless receivers from the same sled power source, voltage sags can occur at power-on and cause camera shutdowns.
- Running the camera on one battery and the focus motor or wireless receiver on a separate battery prevents voltage conflicts.
- Upgrading the sled wiring harness to a heavier gauge (such as 14 AWG) improves power delivery capacity and stability.
- Tiffen offers a tally upgrade for the Zephyr that includes an additional power connection, though confirmation is needed on whether it replaces the existing harness or uses pre-installed lines.
- The Zephyr top stage housing is plastic with metal internal structure and self-shielded RF connectors, which provides adequate shielding for video signals despite the non-metal exterior.
Depends on
- The wire gauge and power capacity information applies specifically to the Zephyr crane.
- Power capacity claims for other cameras beyond the Epic are untested in this discussion.
- The actual current draw limits of the 22 AWG wiring are not specified with exact amperage ratings.
- Whether the Tiffen wiring upgrade replaces the entire harness or supplements existing wiring remains unclear.
