Selecting an appropriate steadicam rig for broadcast work with a Sony PMW 350K camera

16 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

Note (as of October 2026)Curt O. Schaller, the developer of Artemis and Trinity, has no longer been with ARRI since the end of 2025. To our knowledge, ARRI currently has no dedicated team and no official contact persons for its stabilizer systems. In our view, the future of this line is uncertain. If you are buying new, get written confirmation from ARRI beforehand on how long service and spare parts are guaranteed. Have used rigs checked by the manufacturer before you buy.

What the thread found

  • Attending a formal workshop before purchasing steadicam equipment is essential, as trying multiple rigs side-by-side reveals significant differences in comfort and functionality that cannot be assessed from specifications alone.
  • Professional steadicam workshops are available in multiple locations including the United States, Europe, and the United Kingdom, with some offering hands-on experience with the full range of available rigs.
  • The Clipper model offers motorized stage, built-in frame lines and horizon display, and vest options that some operators find more comfortable than competing systems.
  • The Sachtler Artemis lacks a tilt head and motorized stage, and features an older arm design compared to newer alternatives, though its vest is highly regarded.
  • German retailers including distributors in Munich can provide access to Tiffen and other professional steadicam systems with sales support and repair services.
  • Practicing with someone else's rig before committing to a purchase can help assess whether steadicam operation suits your working style and physical capabilities.

Depends on

  • The comparison between Clipper and Archer2SE rigs reflects one operator's preference and may not apply universally.
  • Pricing information provided is from 2010 and does not reflect current market costs.
  • Workshop availability in specific regions and on specific dates was mentioned as future possibilities but not confirmed.
  • The Sachtler Artemis assessment is based on feature comparison rather than direct hands-on testing by the recommending operator.
