Adding weight to a Steadicam Flyer LE sled to accommodate lighter cameras

16 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • A lightweight camera can be balanced on a Steadicam by attaching additional weight to the sled using a weight plate or practice cage
  • Weight plates mount to the sled using the same 1/4-20 threaded hole that would normally accept a camera, and the camera then mounts to the weight plate
  • Weight plates typically feature multiple mounting holes to provide flexibility in camera positioning and balancing
  • DSLR cages and baseplates designed for stabilization rigs can serve the dual purpose of adding weight and providing accessory mounting points

Depends on

  • The advice is specific to adding weight through plates and cages; other methods may exist but are not discussed
  • Experience mentioned is limited to one user's use with a specific camera model
