Selecting a professional stabilized camera sled for broadcast and feature work

13 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

Note (as of October 2026)Curt O. Schaller, the developer of Artemis and Trinity, has no longer been with ARRI since the end of 2025. To our knowledge, ARRI currently has no dedicated team and no official contact persons for its stabilizer systems. In our view, the future of this line is uncertain. If you are buying new, get written confirmation from ARRI beforehand on how long service and spare parts are guaranteed. Have used rigs checked by the manufacturer before you buy.

What the thread found

  • Modularity in sled design allows for component upgrades over time without replacing the entire system, reducing long-term costs.
  • Monitor and battery holder are the most frequently upgraded components as technologies change, and these can typically be swapped with minimal effort.
  • Used sleds can be refurbished to like-new condition and often retain strong resale value.
  • Some manufacturers design sleds where upgrading one component requires replacing others, locking users into repeated purchases rather than true modularity.
  • Post and gimbal assemblies from different manufacturers can sometimes be adapted to fit competitor sleds with appropriate threaded adapters.
  • Compact sled designs that do not require extended configurations offer practical advantages for certain shooting situations.
  • Quick-release top stage mechanisms enable faster transitions between different gimbal orientations without repositioning the entire rig.

Depends on

  • Compatibility between different brands remains limited despite some cross-manufacturer adapter options; detailed specifications must be verified before attempting modifications.
  • Older equipment may have power delivery, rigidity, and format compatibility limitations compared to newer systems.
  • Personal experience with modular systems versus fixed systems varies significantly among professionals, suggesting individual workflow needs should drive purchasing decisions.
  • Discussion includes references to specific product lines and manufacturers from 2013; current offerings and specifications may differ.
  • Some participants disagreed on whether modular design is genuinely useful or represents a manufacturer business model to encourage repeat purchases.
