Upgrading the pan bearing in the Tiffen Steadicam® M2 Volt gimbal: comparison with PRO gimbal bearings and Kaydon supplier changes.

What the thread found
- The Tiffen Steadicam® M2 Volt gimbal supplied in late 2021 came equipped with a Kaydon bearing in the pan axis that appeared visually identical to the bearing supplied by PRO, making a retrofit unnecessary at that time.
- One operator had the bearing inspected by a technician who confirmed visual similarity, but the bearing's specification (tolerances, preload, and cage material) could not be verified without disassembly.
- The industry assumption is that Tiffen switched from a lower-cost bearing with metal or plastic cage construction to Kaydon bearings after complaints.
- PRO gimbal bearings are proprietary specifications: outer dimensions follow a standard, but tolerances, preload, and cage design are PRO-specific and custom runs are available only in large quantities.
- An older Steadicam® M1 from several years prior also used a Kaydon bearing with a slightly different cage design and functioned well after cleaning and re-greasing.
- A PRO bearing from 2013 that had run dry for seven years rotated more freely than a newer PRO bearing after cleaning and now runs well in an M2.
- Newer Tiffen gimbals exhibit very low friction characteristics, and newer Volt drive units have significantly stiffer belts with simpler tension adjustment.
Depends on
- Whether the M2 bearing is functionally identical or merely visually similar to the PRO specification remains unconfirmed without bearing disassembly.
- Kaydon bearing availability for proprietary specifications depends on production volume.
- Bearing performance depends on assembly grease, preload, and cage material, which may vary between suppliers and production batches.
