Evaluating whether to repair an older ProVid 2 system or invest in a newer rig for entry-level steadicam work
Note (as of October 2026)Curt O. Schaller, the developer of Artemis and Trinity, has no longer been with ARRI since the end of 2025. To our knowledge, ARRI currently has no dedicated team and no official contact persons for its stabilizer systems. In our view, the future of this line is uncertain. If you are buying new, get written confirmation from ARRI beforehand on how long service and spare parts are guaranteed. Have used rigs checked by the manufacturer before you buy.
What the thread found
- An older ProVid 2 sled can be upgraded with contemporary features like HD capability and improved battery systems through modifications.
- The arm in a ProVid 2 system requires the payload to be maintained at least 2-3 kilograms below its maximum rated limit to achieve proper balance and smooth operation.
- A ProVid 2 sled that has been properly maintained and upgraded can perform well on professional productions, including live broadcast work.
- Investing additional money into an older incompatible rig may result in poor return on investment when attempting to resell it later.
- Continuing to work with accessible equipment while saving money for a complete newer system can be a more cost-effective long-term strategy than attempting major repairs on aging gear.
Depends on
- The specific extent of modifications possible on a ProVid 2 sled depends on individual technical skill and access to experienced technicians.
- Balance and performance issues described were specific to one user's setup with particular camera and battery configurations.
- The ProVid 2 arm uses an older mounting system that is not directly compatible with modern standardized vest interfaces.
- No testing data provided comparing actual performance of upgraded ProVid 2 systems to modern commercial rigs.
- One successful example of a ProVid 2 sled in professional use does not guarantee similar results across all user scenarios or environmental conditions.
