Repairing shorted BNC video lines in an ARRI Artemis 1 sled: interim workarounds and permanent solutions.

Note (as of October 2026)Curt O. Schaller, the developer of Artemis and Trinity, has no longer been with ARRI since the end of 2025. To our knowledge, ARRI currently has no dedicated team and no official contact persons for its stabilizer systems. In our view, the future of this line is uncertain. If you are buying new, get written confirmation from ARRI beforehand on how long service and spare parts are guaranteed. Have used rigs checked by the manufacturer before you buy.

What the thread found

  • A temporary solution is to run a lightweight BNC/SDI cable directly from the camera to an external monitor, routed either alongside the sled or through the center post, though this risks snagging on furniture during tight work.
  • Older BNC lines in sleds were often not designed for digital HD-SDI signals; one builder removed both junction boxes and routed an SDI-rated cable through the main post as a permanent fix, which requires that the boxes not be permanently wired.
  • A common failure is that the four segments (petals) of the inner contact in a BNC connector spread apart; gently squeezing them together with tweezers provides temporary relief, but permanent repair requires replacing BNC connectors with different center-contact designs; the Tiffen M-2 exhibits the same pin-spreading issue.
  • Troubleshooting involves testing continuity with a multimeter from inner contact to inner contact and outer to outer, plus checking for short circuits between outer and inner contacts.
  • Specialized sled rebuilders such as Cramped Attic accept partial component shipments rather than entire sleds; PRO-Sleds are retrofitted for HD or recabled as pure Wave-Sleds.
  • The ARRI Artemis is considered an orphaned system, though some spare parts remain available through ARRI.

Depends on

  • Depends on sled construction (whether junction boxes are permanently installed)
  • Temporary cable routing depends on sled design and work environment constraints
