Replacing missing or broken screws on M-One follow focus motor
12 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- A missing screw on an M-One motor can be used temporarily if remaining screws are tightened securely, though the screw should be replaced to eliminate gear play.
- The screws are M2 specification, approximately 5mm long (excluding the cap head), and can be sourced from standard hardware suppliers.
- A broken screw shaft stuck in the motor can be removed by an experienced machinist using a left-hand drill bit in a drill press, though stainless steel screws are extremely difficult to remove from soft aluminum.
- Removing screws from the stainless steel ring on the motor should be avoided as the bearing underneath is delicate and difficult to work with.
- Electrical discharge machining (EDM) can be used to remove a broken screw and allow for replacement without disassembly damage.
Depends on
- The advice about left-hand drill removal assumes access to proper equipment and machinist skill.
- The difficulty of removing stainless steel screws from aluminum suggests some screws may be stainless while others are not.
- No confirmation provided about whether loose gear play causes functional problems or long-term damage.
