Fixing chattering FMG.6 follow focus motor
14 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- Chattering in an FMG.6 motor is typically caused by deterioration or contamination of the potentiometer, which causes the motor controller to receive inconsistent position signals and oscillate between values.
- Cleaning the potentiometer with DeoxIT or Servisol super 10 fader and switch cleaner may resolve chattering, though the potentiometer tracks can flake off during cleaning if severely damaged.
- Contact cleaner can successfully restore proper motor function when internal components have become dirty or oxidized.
- Applying grease inside an FMG.6 motor to the clutch or other components can permanently damage the motor beyond repair.
Depends on
- The original potentiometer for the SLD-100 is discontinued and may not be available for replacement.
- Success of cleaning depends on the severity of potentiometer deterioration; severely damaged potentiometers may not be salvageable.
- Opening and repairing the FMG.6 motor requires careful handling to avoid losing small parts like grub screws and to avoid applying lubricants to components that should remain dry.
- The discussion occurred in 2012 and involved a motor model that was already considered redundant at that time.
