2022From a Facebook group: The Steadicam Group
Choosing a first major stabilizer rig: Tiffen Steadicam®, GPI PRO, or small-maker sled (Calicocam), budget and features considered.
Note (as of October 2026)Curt O. Schaller, the developer of Artemis and Trinity, has no longer been with ARRI since the end of 2025. To our knowledge, ARRI currently has no dedicated team and no official contact persons for its stabilizer systems. In our view, the future of this line is uncertain. If you are buying new, get written confirmation from ARRI beforehand on how long service and spare parts are guaranteed. Have used rigs checked by the manufacturer before you buy.

What the thread found
- Attend workshops and test all candidate sleds with multiple operators before purchase; final choice depends on budget.
- Small-maker sled Calicocam V18 praised for build quality and direct service from builder; one operator switched from Master Series because the rotating Master-Post interfered with work, and needed gimbal repositioning capability for low mode.
- Package recommendation at that time: Tiffen Steadicam® M2 with Volt, G50x arm and Zephyr vest for approximately 33,000 USD as a lifetime rig; alternatively Flyer/Zephyr as intermediate step.
- ARRI Artemis 2 noted for numerous power outputs on top stage, gimbal with ceramic bearings and precise top stage; arm quality treated separately.
- XCS considered the first choice but most expensive and rarely available used; older XCS Ultimate 1 models not designed for power demands of current cameras.
- Customer service experiences with major manufacturers vary widely, from immediate response to months without reply; Tiffen orders sometimes process better through dealers; many operators hold PRO arms and vests as best investment ('buy PRO, buy once').
- Higher price does not automatically mean better quality.
Depends on
- Customer service reliability from Tiffen and GPI PRO varies by region and time period.
- Suitability depends on camera weight, operating style and intended use cases.
- Availability of used XCS and small-maker sleds varies.
