Building custom weight plates for steadicam equipment

17 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • A weight plate can be constructed from a rectangular steel piece measuring approximately 3 inches by 10 inches, drilled with multiple mounting holes to achieve the target weight of around 5 pounds.
  • Countersinking holes in a weight plate is necessary for flush mounting to the camera or steadicam baseplate.
  • Weight plates can be mounted between a camera and dovetail using a quick-release plate system, allowing the weight to remain permanently attached while cameras can be swapped.
  • An alternative approach involves stacking nested pipes of decreasing diameter, filling them with expanding foam to prevent rattling, capping the ends, and covering with rubber bed liner before securing to the camera handle with a worm clamp.
  • A simpler construction method uses a single drilled steel plate with long bolts passing through it and into the camera's threaded mount.
  • Multiple mounting hole options in a weight plate allow fine-tuning of the camera's center of gravity position.
  • Using the camera's bottom threads to support a weight plate may stress those threads beyond their design capacity, which can be problematic in low-mode operation on cameras with weak mounting points.
  • Ready-made steel plate blanks can be obtained from industrial metal suppliers already in the desired shape and approximate weight, requiring only hole drilling to complete.

Depends on

  • The pipe-and-foam method does not fit all camera models.
  • Some approaches require access to machine tools such as a mill or drill press.
  • The maximum stress that a camera's bottom threading can safely support varies by camera model and may limit weight plate configurations.
  • Specific hole patterns and thread specifications were discussed but no universally agreed-upon standard was established.
