Weight plate options and balancing strategies for operating smaller cameras on Zephyr and Pilot steadicam rigs

What the thread found
- Custom weight plates from specialized vendors can add 6-10 pounds needed to properly balance lightweight cameras on larger rigs like the Zephyr
- Counterweight systems marketed for photography provide affordable weight addition of approximately 4.5 pounds while raising the center of gravity and maintaining access to camera controls
- Placing weights on the stage mounted stage rather than extending the post provides better pan inertia, while post extension contributes more to tilt inertia for lightweight rigs
- On lightweight rigs maxed out for weight, dynamic balancing can be achieved by removing the monitor and distributing pilot weights evenly across the stage hanger
- Extending the post on lightweight rigs can introduce microvibrations and complicates framing and focus work without an external monitor output solution
- DSLR cameras typically cannot simultaneously output to both the camera display and external monitor without third-party software, forcing a choice between proper operating form and practical focus ability during live events
Depends on
- Discussion centered on the Pilot rig with DSLR cameras; applicability to other camera and rig combinations not fully explored
- Post extension length and its vibration effects depend on careful technique and specific rig configuration
- The monitor mounting solution mentioned was still being developed and not yet fully implemented
- Software solutions for simultaneous monitor output availability and reliability were questioned
