Operating Steadicam with 35mm adapter without remote follow focus
18 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- A 35mm adapter reduces depth of field significantly, making focus difficult to maintain on moving shots without a remote follow focus system.
- Increasing light and stopping down the lens can increase depth of field and help maintain focus without a remote system, though this limits creative options.
- Using wider lenses and keeping actors at distance of 6-8 feet can help keep subjects in focus, but provides limited creative flexibility.
- Removing the 35mm adapter entirely restores normal depth of field but affects image look, field of view, grain and visual consistency with other footage shot with the adapter.
- Hardwired follow focus units may be available as inexpensive rentals from rental houses, and other operators often loan or rent equipment at favorable rates to fellow operators.
- When mixing footage shot with and without a 35mm adapter in the same scene, the different depth of field and visual characteristics may be acceptable depending on scene context.
- If a focus system fails or produces soft focus, responsibility typically falls on the operator rather than being attributed to production's failure to rent proper equipment.
- A follow focus system is considered standard equipment for professional Steadicam work with 35mm adapters.
Depends on
- Discussion focused on specific cameras mentioned: HVX200 and DVX100a with 35mm adapters.
- Workarounds like string-based distance guides were discussed as impractical last resorts.
- Experience level of original poster was novice, limiting applicability to experienced operators.
- UK-specific context for availability of rental equipment and operators.
- Test results for various approaches were discussed but not comprehensively documented in thread.
