Powering and mounting wireless follow focus on a RED camera flying a Steadicam Flyer
14 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- The Flyer rig has limited power capacity and voltage drop issues when powering both the camera and wireless follow focus accessories, which can cause the camera to shut down during startup.
- Powering the camera separately from the follow focus system using handgrip batteries on the camera itself avoids voltage drop problems and keeps the rig within weight limits.
- When using a single power connection on the Flyer, the follow focus receiver should be powered on before the camera to prevent startup surge from causing the camera to shut down.
- Mounting a wireless follow focus motor requires either a Tiffen bracket for 15mm rods on the Flyer plate, or drilling and tapping a Redrock Micro clamp, since standard mounting holes often do not align.
- Avoid 19mm Arri-style dovetail mounts on the Flyer as they add too much weight.
- The Flyer's power connector is located at the rear of the camera stage, requiring an extra-long power cable for accessories mounted at the front.
- A thorough equipment prep session several days before shooting is essential to test the exact camera configuration and avoid compatibility issues.
- RED camera systems lack standardization in accessories, requiring custom solutions like power splitter cables or junction boxes.
- HD-SDI output from a RED camera requires either rewiring the Flyer with 75 ohm BNC connectors, replacing the monitor with an HD-capable model, or using a downconverter like the Decimator to convert SDI to composite video for the stock SD monitor.
Depends on
- Advice applies specifically to first-generation Flyer and Flyer LE rigs with RED Epic or similar high-power cameras.
- Weight limitations of 15 pounds on rear stage of Flyer restrict power and accessory options.
- Custom power cables and modifications often need to be fabricated rather than purchased off-the-shelf.
- Some claims about Flyer wiring capacity and HD support were uncertain among participants.
