Building a camera hard mount rig for low-angle filming on ice surfaces
17 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- Skate blades work better than rubber tires for movement on ice, with options including purpose-built dolly skates from manufacturers or custom-ground steel plates.
- A platform built from plywood with hockey pucks mounted underneath can provide a stable base for camera rigs and may be preferred by venues to protect the ice surface.
- Steering a rig on pucks is more difficult than using a wheeled dolly on skates, which requires careful control and can damage the ice surface during turning maneuvers.
- An experienced person who can skate while operating or pushing the rig significantly improves results and control of the equipment.
- Low-budget alternatives include mounting a doorway dolly onto inverted steel track sections using ratchet straps, or using kicksleds with flexible steering rails for turning.
- A hard mount can be attached to the rig platform using pipe sections or speed rail, with additional booming capability allowing quick adjustments between low and normal skating heights.
- Rust prevention is critical when using steel components on ice, with stainless steel being preferable to regular steel.
Depends on
- The 'Miracle' movie rig mentioned was never documented in this thread, so specific design details remain unknown.
- Dolly options like Fisher or Panther systems on skates may have limited availability in some regions.
- Weight of the rig affects maneuverability and requires consideration of who will push or pull it.
- Steering performance and stability comparisons between different rig types remain anecdotal rather than systematically tested.
- Venue restrictions may limit which mounting methods are acceptable based on ice surface protection requirements.
