Minimizing pan drift on straight architectural shots with ARRI Trinity 2: gyro solutions, sled configuration, and operator technique.

Note (as of October 2026)Curt O. Schaller, the developer of Artemis and Trinity, has no longer been with ARRI since the end of 2025. To our knowledge, ARRI currently has no dedicated team and no official contact persons for its stabilizer systems. In our view, the future of this line is uncertain. If you are buying new, get written confirmation from ARRI beforehand on how long service and spare parts are guaranteed. Have used rigs checked by the manufacturer before you buy.

What the thread found

  • Trinity 2 halves pan damping and positions the guide hand approximately one foot further from the sensor than Steadicam®, mechanically coupling pan and tilt in head stabilization depending on sled orientation; errors are magnified compared to Steadicam®.
  • Architectural work demands precision that body-mounted rigs cannot guarantee without external aids.
  • One operator reports that a 2×2 gyro mounted at the nodal point below the post outperforms a single KS4; a KS4 running at approximately 70% of rated speed also mitigates drift.
  • For straight shots, configure Trinity 2 identically to Steadicam®: lower camera position on the rods, dial in drop time, lock the gimbal tilt, and fly in classical High or Low mode.
  • Technique shifts from Steadicam® hand style to Trinity arm swings that initiate booms, avoiding pan impulses from the guide hand; watch the bubble level rather than the monitor on linear shots.
  • For demanding linear work, deploy a Steadicam® rig as backup or use a dolly, rickshaw, or hard mount; mastering Trinity demands years of practice, especially with narrow lenses.
  • Volt 3 disables motors during horizontal operation; Volt cannot be used on Trinity 2 but functions on ARRI Artemis.

Depends on

  • Sled orientation and head tuning
  • Camera weight and lens choice
  • Operator experience level
  • Whether external gyro stabilization is available
