Follow focus solutions for cameras mounted on the DJI Ronin-MX gimbal
What the thread found
- Manual focus lenses can be adjusted during setup without powering off the gimbal, but focus adjustment during recording will destabilize the shot
- The DJI Focus system draws power from a p-tap connection on the Ronin and includes motor-driven focus control
- Redrock Micro offers a thumbwheel-based follow focus system compatible with the Ronin setup
- Lenzhound by Motion Dogs provides a motorized follow focus option but may generate significant noise during operation
- Lens focus gears must have teeth or require an adapter strap to work with motorized follow focus systems
- Alternative follow focus systems include ProAim EF-PRO, KeyEasyFocus, UniVice, Movcam, and Camtree V2
- Two-operator setups allow one person to operate the gimbal while another handles focus pulling remotely
Depends on
- Not all Ronin models may have p-tap power connections
- Single-operator use with motorized follow focus systems requires careful rig setup or mounting solutions
- One participant had only used ARRI follow focus systems and could not compare other products from personal experience
- Lenzhound motor noise may interfere with audio recording in quiet environments
