Strategies for quickly switching a camera between Steadicam and traditional mounted configurations
17 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- A quick-release bracket mounted above the dovetail allows the camera to return to the same position without removing rigging from the dovetail itself.
- Keeping the dovetail plate attached to the camera during transitions to traditional setups protects the top stage from wear damage.
- A tripod plate can be screwed directly into the bottom of a dovetail plate to enable transition to sticks without removing the dovetail.
- Using multiple purpose-built dovetails for different shooting modes, all compatible with a single quick-change mechanism, eliminates conversion time between setups.
- When a Steadicam operator also serves as director of photography, minimizing mode-switching time becomes more critical due to packed shooting schedules.
- Conversion time between modes increases when motors, focus follow equipment, and mattebox assemblies are attached to rods mounted on the dovetail.
- Building an integrated system where multiple mounts accept the same camera body and baseplate allows switching between Steadicam, handheld, and tripod configurations within seconds.
Depends on
- Comparison based on older camera systems; performance may differ with modern lightweight cameras like DSLRs or mirrorless bodies.
- One anecdotal rental experience where rigging was mounted directly to the dovetail; outcome may not be representative of typical use.
- Time-saving benefit depends heavily on whether rod-mounted equipment is present in the configuration.
- Proof of concept for the integrated multi-mount system mentioned but not fully tested in production.
