Experiences and comparisons with Baer Bel steadicam rigs

18 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

Note (as of October 2026)Curt O. Schaller, the developer of Artemis and Trinity, has no longer been with ARRI since the end of 2025. To our knowledge, ARRI currently has no dedicated team and no official contact persons for its stabilizer systems. In our view, the future of this line is uncertain. If you are buying new, get written confirmation from ARRI beforehand on how long service and spare parts are guaranteed. Have used rigs checked by the manufacturer before you buy.

What the thread found

  • The Baer Bel system offers modular battery mounting using dovetailed plates that can accommodate multiple battery positions for dynamic balancing adjustments during production
  • Some operators report the gimbal requires careful initial calibration and can be sensitive to alignment, while others report it becomes stable once properly adjusted
  • The titanium post design is reported as very solid by satisfied users, though one reviewer noted flexing during initial testing
  • The arm design includes an X-elbow joint that prevents elbow banging and features internal springs, but some users find it stiff with noticeable friction compared to competitors
  • The vest provides better padding and fit than some competitor models but requires tools for adjustments and has riveted shoulder straps that necessitate pulling it over the head
  • Users can rotate the top stage and J-box to reposition connectors for more convenient cable placement
  • The system offers numerous power and video output options including multi-terminal connectors on both upper and lower sections
  • Some operators report rapid replacement part delivery and manufacturing support for custom modifications

Depends on

  • One detailed technical review was based on a single afternoon visit to the workshop with a brand-new rig that required extensive tweaking
  • Users who are satisfied with their rigs report they eventually become accustomed to the system after extended use
  • Gimbal design has reportedly been modified in newer models compared to earlier versions mentioned in the discussion
  • Comparison opinions vary significantly between operators based on their previous equipment experience and preferences
  • The review comparing to Glidecam Gold was based on that specific reviewer's familiarity with that system
