Tiffen Steadicam® Axis with integrated Volt as an upgrade for owner-operators and DPs flying RED V-Raptor on occasional projects

DisputedParticipants disagreed and reached no conclusion. Read the findings as positions, not as an answer.

What the thread found

  • The Steadicam® Axis offers strong value for owner-operators in smaller markets, representing a significant step up from entry-level rigs at substantially lower cost than a full-size rig with Volt; the integrated Volt can be disabled to fly the system as a classical Steadicam®.
  • Payload in practice ranges from 5.5 to 7 kg comfortably; one operator reached the A30 arm's limit at 7.5 kg camera weight using all four foot weights and a high gimbal position; manufacturer specification is approximately 9 kg (20 lb) with the A30 arm.
  • Pan inertia and drag (fluid-head simulation) are adjustable via button on the Volt; setting drag to zero yields pure inertial feel; scene settings can be saved via the gimbal's scene button; one operator found the pan motion felt artificial or sticky despite correct tuning.
  • Multiple users report the A30 arm feels stiff, creaks, and resists fine adjustment; some operators substitute the reportedly identical Zephyr arm or a G-50x with matching post diameter, though this latter choice risks overloading the sled.
  • One operator experienced a single Volt dropout despite adequate battery charge; this remains anecdotal and requires further observation.

Depends on

  • No 24-volt power supply option; smaller platfom (Archer-size dimensions) and reduced arm post diameter compared to larger Steadicam® rigs.
  • Payload and arm behavior depend on specific camera weight, choice of arm, and foot-weight configuration.
  • Volt pan feel may depend on operator preference and tuning of drag and inertia parameters.
