Gimbal balance and centering issues when the rig is rotated 180 degrees

13 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • A gimbal that appears balanced in one orientation but becomes unbalanced when rotated 180 degrees typically indicates the gimbal is out of center or the post is not perfectly round.
  • Gimbal centering can be adjusted using two screws, with adjustment instructions available in manufacturer documentation, requiring a #6 spanner driver tool.
  • When adjusting gimbal centering screws, turning one screw in must be matched by turning the other screw out by the same amount to maintain consistent bearing tension.
  • The non-adjustable axis of a gimbal may have some manufacturing tolerance that creates a small deviation even after the primary axis is centered.
  • Very small deviations of less than one degree at typical operating drop times may be within acceptable manufacturing tolerances and not require service.
  • If a gimbal continues to show inconsistent balance after centering adjustments, the bearings may be worn and require professional service with precision measuring tools.

Depends on

  • Gimbal centering adjustment should only be attempted if you understand the process, as improper adjustment can cause additional damage.
  • Some gimbal models may have different adjustment procedures or capabilities.
  • Very low drop times during testing can make minute friction effects appear as balance errors.
  • The documents referenced in the discussion that contain specific calibration instructions are not included in this thread.
