Distinguishing Flyer LE from earlier Flyer generations and comparing used Flyer to new Pilot

16 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • The Flyer LE became available around April 2008 at NAB.
  • Physical differences between Flyer LE and earlier models include an extendable post at the bottom near the monitor with a tie-down clamp, a thicker grip, native 12/24 capability without modification, and an HD monitor option.
  • A Flyer unit purchased in 2007 would be an earlier generation, not the LE variant.
  • When choosing between a used standard Flyer and a new Pilot, the Flyer has higher weight capacity while the Pilot is lighter, easier to dynamic balance, comes with warranty, and offers better resale value if an upgrade is needed later.
  • The Pilot has a weight limit around 10 pounds.
  • Actual payload weight including all accessories like follow focus, mattebox, adapters, wireless receivers, and hard drives often exceeds the camera body specification alone.
  • Accurate weighing of the complete camera system with all planned accessories is necessary before selecting between rig options.

Depends on

  • The Pilot weight limit mentioned as approximately 10 pounds is stated without confirmation.
  • No specific weight capacity for the standard Flyer is provided.
  • The discussion focuses on PD170/175 sized cameras but recommendations apply more broadly.
  • Some playful comments in the thread about Flyer LE features are not serious product descriptions.
