Choosing an appropriate steadicam rig for learning with an Arri Alexa Classic camera

Note (as of October 2026)Curt O. Schaller, the developer of Artemis and Trinity, has no longer been with ARRI since the end of 2025. To our knowledge, ARRI currently has no dedicated team and no official contact persons for its stabilizer systems. In our view, the future of this line is uncertain. If you are buying new, get written confirmation from ARRI beforehand on how long service and spare parts are guaranteed. Have used rigs checked by the manufacturer before you buy.

What the thread found

  • A lightweight stabilizer in the 5-15kg range is unsuitable for operating an Arri Alexa Classic camera; a larger professional rig such as those from Tiffen or GPI-Pro is needed instead.
  • Learning on smaller rigs with lighter cameras like a BMPCC4K around 14 pounds can serve as practice platforms before investing in a full-sized camera rig.
  • Formal steadicam workshops spanning a week are recommended before committing to purchasing expensive professional equipment.
  • Used market options for big rigs are currently available for purchase.

Depends on

  • The advice is specific to flying full-sized cinema cameras like the Arri Alexa Classic and does not apply to smaller sensor cameras.
  • Budget considerations were mentioned but specific price thresholds were not established.
  • No technical specifications or load capacity comparisons were provided to explain why the lightweight rig was inappropriate.
