Compatibility and technical differences between Preston FIZ hand units and motor drive receiver models

13 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • The MDR-1 hand unit includes torque settings and is not compatible with the HU-2 hand unit unless the HU-2 has been modified to older MDR-1 standards
  • The MDR-2 motor drive receiver can be made compatible with the HU-3 hand unit by replacing the G-3 board with a G-4 board that handles 2.4GHz frequency selection
  • The Lemo 304 connector used in Preston D-tap to MDR power cable connections is size 1B
  • Both MDR-1 and MDR-2 systems remain capable of high-quality focus pulling performance despite model age

Depends on

  • The initial claim about MDR-1 lacking torque settings was disputed and corrected
  • Information about hand unit and motor receiver compatibility is based on forum discussion rather than official documentation
  • The reason for price differences between used HU-2 and other models is attributed to compatibility limitations but not independently verified
